Civil War Washington Logo - a professional development workshop for teachers

by partners of the Civil War Washington Consortium (Ford’s Theater, Tudor Place, President Lincoln’s Cottage and the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site, who are committed to investigating the Civil War in all its complexity, and seek applicants with diverse experiences who bring a variety of perspectives to the week of learning.

Civil War Washington is held every July in Washington, DC.  The cost is free.  Applications are now closed.  Check back for application and registration for July 2024 or click here for additional information.

  • Civil War – Classroom Curriculum

Through their Eyes is a resource packet, of four adaptable lesson plans, designed to complement the book, A Georgetown Life: The Reminiscences of Britannia Wellington Peter Kennon of Tudor Place.  Published in 2020, the book is a valuable collection of primary resources with accompanying secondary analysis and annotation revealing intimate details of Martha Washington’s descendants in Georgetown through Britannia’s (the second owner of Tudor Place) eyes. While this specific resource guide focuses on slavery and the Civil War,  A Georgetown Life provides primary source material (with secondary source context) on a variety of events in 19th century Washington DC that could easily be incorporated into classroom use.  Hear editor, Grant Quertermous speak about the book and recording the oral history stories of the Peter family.

Download an excerpt from the resource packet.  For the complete version with a hard copy of A Georgetown Life email us at education@tudorplace.org or call 202-965-0400.
