Master Preservation Plan

From its earliest days as two separate buildings overlooking the Potomac River from Georgetown Heights, Tudor Place has seen spaces and objects used and reused for various purposes all while careful measures were taken to ensure the longevity of what stood here for centuries. This legacy of care serves as an example of how we, as stewards of this National Historic Landmark, can preserve the past while ensuring its sustainability in the future. The Master Preservation Plan provides a blueprint for the preservation of the landmark architecture, the conservation of extraordinary collections and the care of heritage landscapes, while supporting the organization’s educational mission and enhancing the experience of visitors.

The Plan includes numerous measures that promote environmental and organizational sustainability. A few are included below:

• Cisterns beneath the South Lawn capture rainwater from the gutters and downspouts of the historic house for use in watering the lawn and adjacent planting areas.
• Installation of energy panels in the administration building (Dower House) and the garage building promote efficient heating and cooling of both these facilities.
• A natural gas emergency generator installed in the Mower House (on the lower South Lawn) replaced an inefficient diesel model.
• Replacement of all gas-powered outdoor equipment, including leaf blowers and lawn mowers to battery efficient tools and equipment which require less energy, more reliable and produce zero emissions.
