Become a Docent

Join a dedicated group of volunteers sharing the history of the United States as witnessed through the eyes of six generations of descendants of Martha Washington and the enslaved and free people who lived and worked at this National Historic Landmark.

Docents provide high-quality public and group tours of Tudor Place’s historic house Tuesday – Sunday, 10am to 3pm. Tour length is 45 minutes to 1 hour. Docents are expected to volunteer for at least 4 tours per month. Docents receive in-depth training that includes 6 sessions (over the course of 5 weeks) about the organization, site, content and best practices for educating visitors of all ages. Additionally, time for research and shadowing tours facilitated by experienced staff and docents is built into the training program.

Ongoing educational opportunities are provided throughout the year including guest speakers, virtual meetings and field trips to other area historic sites and museums. Information to deepen content areas of interest that relate to the history of Tudor Place and the people who lived and worked here will be provided for docents to utilize at their own pace.

New docent training is generally conducted twice a year, once in the summer and once in the winter. Contact education@tudorplace.org or call 202-965-0400. To join an upcoming summer or winter class of new docents please fill out this application form.

Become a Garden Volunteer

Team up with Tudor Place gardeners and fellow garden enthusiasts to care for this historic landscape by planting, weeding, deadheading, pruning, mulching, seed collecting and more. Ongoing educational opportunities are provided to volunteers throughout the year, including guest lectures, virtual meetings and field trips to area historic sites and museums. Contact maintenance@tudorplace.org or call 202-965-0400. Larger-scale opportunities for the community to join us are available on select Saturdays.  These sessions target and remove invasive plants from the landscape.  Individuals and groups are welcome.  Signup here for Saturday help.
