He is the author or editor of three books\, and his writing has appeared in the Washington Post\, TIME\, Smithsonian Magazine\, among other publications. His latest book\, “Thy Will Be Done: George Washington’s Legacy of Slavery and the Fight for American Memory\,” explores how generations of Americans have made sense of George Washington’s involvement in slavery. Marks currently serves as the Vice President of Research and Engagement for the American Association for State and Local History\, the national professional association for public history practitioners and institutions. He earned his Ph.D. in history from Rice University. How will the upcoming Semiquincentennial reflect what history looks like now? \nM.J. Rymsza-Pawlowska is an interdisciplinary cultural historian of 19th- and 20th-century United States and an associate professor of history and public history at American University. She is the author of “History Comes Alive: Public History and Popular Culture in the 1970s” (University of North Carolina Press\, 2017)\, which traces the emergence of immersive engagement with the past in postwar American culture and numerous articles in scholarly journals. She is a New America Us@250 fellow and Smithsonian Research Associate. Her work has been profiled in the Washington Post\, New York Times\, Bloomberg and Time magazine\, and in 2022\, she was a featured commentator on Netflix’s “D.B. Explore historic sites and collect a wealth of resources.  Gain tools to help students grapple with histories whose legacies matter today.  Hosted by the Civil War Washington Consortium\, who are committed to investigating the Civil War in all its complexity and seek applicants with diverse experiences who bring a variety of perspectives to the week of learning. \nTeachers/Educators: FREE. Participants must pay a $100 refundable deposit to secure their place in the institute.
