SUMMARY:Picnic Theater Presents: Heaven Can Wait
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy an evening on the South Lawn of Tudor Place as local sensation Picnic Theatre Company will be back for another summer performance!  A Washington Post investigative reporter\, on the cusp of winning the coveted Pulitzer Prize for journalism\, is accidentally taken away from his body by an overanxious angel before he was meant to die. The reporter returns to life in the body of a recently murdered millionaire. How will the reporter adjust to his predicament\, avoid his treacherous adversaries\, and find his way back to his life and vocation? \nJoin us as The Picnic Theatre Company presents a loving parody of the classic Heaven Can Wait – a story so beloved that the original 1940s movie has been remade twice as the iconic\, Warren Beatty version from the 1970s\, and again by comedian Chris Rock in the 2000s.  This story takes place in Washington DC\, present day. \nGuests are encouraged to bring water. Be sure to remove all trash. Trash receptacles are not provided. Bring mats\, blankets or a camp chair. Due to the historic landscape\, games\, chairs with legs\, blow up furniture\, red wine etc. are not permitted. \nGrounds open at 5:30 p.m.  The performance begins at 7:00 p.m. (90 minutes\, no intermission). \nMember: $20  | Non-member: $20 \nSince its founding in 2010\, the Picnic Theatre Company’s brand of site-specific party theatre has been called one of the “culture party hybrids taking Washington by storm” by the Washington Post. According to the Financial Times\, “The Picnic Theatre Company’s bipartisan players…spend their days running the country and their evenings running the show.” Washington professionals\, journalists and diplomats by day the all-volunteer Picnic Theatre players donate proceeds of performances to historical preservation of museums\, and arts and education charities. www.facebook.com/PicnicTheatre. SUMMARY:Juneteenth - Visit Tudor Place at Mt. Vernon
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Family Hub on the Bowling Green at Mount Vernon\nJoin Tudor Place staff at the Family Hub on the Bowling Green (9:30 – 3:30) at Mount Vernon – today only! Learn more about the lives of enslaved people at Mount Vernon and what emancipation and resistance meant in 18th-century Virginia. Discover how enslaved men and women defined their agency and the legacies they left behind. There will be opportunities for both self and group reflection and self-expression through art. Join Tudor Place staff who will share stories about the life of John Luckett\, who self-emancipated from Fairfax County\, Virginia in 1862 and made his way into the District of Columbia after the Compensated Emancipation Act was signed. He would be hired as the gardener of Tudor Place\, a role he held for 44 years. From 1862-1906\, Mr. Luckett made a home for himself and his family in the SW quadrant of DC near Capitol Hill and became part of a vibrant community. \nWhy are we joining Mt. Vernon today? As sites both with a history of slavery\, we come together to honor the legacy and lives of those who lived and labored at these places and to tell their stories.  Also Martha Peter\, the first owner of Tudor Place\, was the granddaughter of Martha Washington and step-granddaughter of George Washington. Tudor Place is the only historic house in the District of Columbia with ties to America’s First Family. \nTudor Place will be closed to the public on Thursday\, June 19th in observance of Juneteenth.   \nTudor Place will reopen on Friday\, June 20 per our regular scheduled programs and guided historic house tours and self-guided garden visits.

SUMMARY:Summer Saturday: Architecture of Tudor Place
DESCRIPTION:The earliest buildings on the land that became Tudor Place date to 1795\, but how have they changed since then? What can this Federal style house tell us about the people who lived and worked (both enslaved labor and paid servants) here? Explore these questions and more during this Summer Saturday program. Upon Martha and Thomas Peter purchasing the land in 1805\, friend Dr. William Thornton got to work drawing up what is referred to as the Center Block of the house. Thornton’s architectural experience included designing the first US Capitol Building. He would go on to lead the Patent Office and design other structures in the DC area. \nThis program will include a look at his architecture designs as well as records from the Historic American Building Survey (HABS)\, activities for all ages and guided architecture- themed tours of the site. \nMembers: FREE | Non-Members (Ages 4+): $5

SUMMARY:Summer Saturday: Art History at Tudor Place
DESCRIPTION:Tudor Place is more than a historic house; it’s an art collection of many mediums. It’s a treasure trove that includes sculptures and watercolors\, sketches and photographs…and more. For early childhood learners (and anyone who wants to have fun with creating art) join us in the morning for story time and art activities. Those interested in taking a deep dive into some of the portraits on the walls\, sign up for our specialty tour. Lastly\, art comes in so many forms. We might not recognize art used in everyday life\, like plates. Join us for a talk about some of the porcelain plates in our collection followed by an activity.   \nSchedule of Events \n10:30 am – 12 pm: Stories and Art Creation (no pre-registration required) \n12:00 pm – 1:00 pm: Portraits of the Past Tour (space limited\, reserve your ticket) \n2:30 pm – 3:30pm: Plated History (no pre-registration required) \n  \nMembers: $5 | Non-Members (Ages 4+): $10
