SUMMARY:Summer Saturday: Architecture of Tudor Place
DESCRIPTION:The earliest buildings on the land that became Tudor Place date to 1795\, but how have they changed since then? What can this Federal style house tell us about the people who lived and worked (both enslaved labor and paid servants) here? Explore these questions and more during this Summer Saturday program. Upon Martha and Thomas Peter purchasing the land in 1805\, friend Dr. William Thornton got to work drawing up what is referred to as the Center Block of the house. Thornton’s architectural experience included designing the first US Capitol Building. He would go on to lead the Patent Office and design other structures in the DC area. \nThis program will include a look at his architecture designs as well as records from the Historic American Building Survey (HABS)\, activities for all ages and guided architecture- themed tours of the site. \nMembers: FREE | Non-Members (Ages 4+): $5

SUMMARY:Juneteenth - Visit Tudor Place at Mt. Vernon
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Family Hub on the Bowling Green at Mount Vernon\nJoin Tudor Place staff at the Family Hub on the Bowling Green (9:30 – 3:30) at Mount Vernon – today only! Learn more about the lives of enslaved people at Mount Vernon and what emancipation and resistance meant in 18th-century Virginia. Discover how enslaved men and women defined their agency and the legacies they left behind. There will be opportunities for both self and group reflection and self-expression through art. Join Tudor Place staff who will share stories about the life of John Luckett\, who self-emancipated from Fairfax County\, Virginia in 1862 and made his way into the District of Columbia after the Compensated Emancipation Act was signed. He would be hired as the gardener of Tudor Place\, a role he held for 44 years. From 1862-1906\, Mr. Luckett made a home for himself and his family in the SW quadrant of DC near Capitol Hill and became part of a vibrant community. \nWhy are we joining Mt. Vernon today? As sites both with a history of slavery\, we come together to honor the legacy and lives of those who lived and labored at these places and to tell their stories.  Also Martha Peter\, the first owner of Tudor Place\, was the granddaughter of Martha Washington and step-granddaughter of George Washington. Tudor Place is the only historic house in the District of Columbia with ties to America’s First Family. \nTudor Place will be closed to the public on Thursday\, June 19th in observance of Juneteenth.   \nTudor Place will reopen on Friday\, June 20 per our regular scheduled programs and guided historic house tours and self-guided garden visits.
