DESCRIPTION:In this week-long institute\, designed for K-12 teachers\, connect with peers to illuminate new perspective and under-told stories. Explore historic sites and collect a wealth of resources.  Gain tools to help students grapple with histories whose legacies matter today.  Hosted by the Civil War Washington Consortium\, who are committed to investigating the Civil War in all its complexity and seek applicants with diverse experiences who bring a variety of perspectives to the week of learning. \nTeachers/Educators: FREE. Participants must pay a $100 refundable deposit to secure their place in the institute. But this version of the story is only half the truth. In this riveting program\, historian and author Richard Bell invites audiences to rediscover the Revolution as a world war that unleashed chaos\, opportunity and transformation across six continents. From the sugar fields of the Caribbean to the court of the King of Mysore\, from refugee camps on the Canadian frontier to political uprisings in Sierra Leone and Peru\, the war that gave birth to the United States was never simply America’s own. DESCRIPTION:In his 1969 book about Tudor Place\, its final owner\, Armistead Peter 3rd\, commented that in the increasingly common conversations happening about old houses “they are hardly ever spoken of or considered in the light of their original function: to be a family home.” Five years after his passing\, and in accordance with his wishes\, his own family home opened as a historic house museum. Who is the man that turned his home into a museum\, and how can a family home help us tell more than just the story of the Peter family? \nShelby Stevenson is the Visitor Services Coordinator at Tudor Place. Before coming to Tudor Place\, she worked at Mount Vernon and Historic Alexandria. She received a bachelor’s degree in history from Marymount University in 2020 and is currently working on a master’s degree in history at George Mason University.
