SUMMARY:Founding Fortunes at the National Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Join curator Rob DeHart at the National Gallery of Art and discover the story behind the very recognizable The Washington Family painting and its significance to Tudor Place. George and Martha Washington posed for Savage (the painter) in New York City\, then the country’s capital. But the painting is set at the family’s Virginia plantation\, Mount Vernon. The Potomac River fills the background. A map on the table refers to plans to move the capital to Washington\, DC. The Black man standing to the right may be one of George Washington’s enslaved attendants\, Christopher Sheels. He was one of the 317 people the Washington’s enslaved at Mount Vernon. SUMMARY:Landmark Lecture: The Art of Replication
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with Adam T. Erby\, The Martha Washington Chief Curator\, as he delves into the history of the piece and the process of recreating the Washington tea table. \nOn August 20\, 1757\, the London merchant Richard Washington packed “A fine Mahogany Tea Table” and a variety of other goods for the 25-year-old bachelor planter George Washington. Washington used this piece\, one of the most sophisticated pieces of furniture to arrive in the Virginia Colony\, for the rest of his life\, and it survives today at Tudor Place. In 2022\, George Washington’s Mount Vernon embarked on a project to recreate this magnificent piece of furniture for use in the historic home. The recreation restores missing elements of the original and allows for the piece to be interpreted in its original setting. \nAdam Erby received his bachelor’s degree in American Studies from the University of Virginia in 2010 and a master’s degree from the Winterthur Program in American Material Culture in 2013. He has been working with the collection at Mount Vernon since 2012 where he has published numerous articles of research regarding the Washington Collection. \nPhoto Credit: Gavin Ashworth\, Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association \nMembers: FREE | Non-Members: FREE \nNote: This program will be held LIVE at Tudor Place and  virtually. \nIn-Person Registration Link: Click here. \nVirtual Registration Link: Click here.  You will be sent instructions on how to access the virtual event one day before the event.

SUMMARY:Landmark Lecture: Mary Kittamaquund: An Indigenous Foremother Reappears
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Indigenous Peoples Day in October and American Indian Heritage Month in November\, we are pleased to have Dr. Gabrielle Tayac\, Ph.D. present on the lesser-known history of the lands that ultimately became the home of the Peter Family. You probably know about Martha Washington\, but have you ever heard of Mary Kittamaquund? She was the daughter of the 17th century Piscataway Tayac (high chief) and child bride of Giles Brent. Mary legally owned lands eventually incorporated into George Washington’s properties. We will enter her tribal and colonial worlds to understand how Tudor Place has a longer history than you knew. \nDr. Gabrielle Tayac (Piscataway) is a community-engaged public historian and museum curator. She grounds her work in both living Indigenous knowledge systems and historical methods. She served as an inaugural curator\, historian and educator at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian\, helping to transform museum practices to mutually energize Native reunification with cultural sources for research\, community development and common understanding. At George Mason University\, Dr. Tayac oversees the CoCreative History Space to train new generations of public historians in their pursuits to understand and interpret histories\, near and far\, ancient and modern. She has served on numerous advisory boards\, councils and committees\, including America250\, Dumbarton Oaks’ Mellon Initiative on Democracy and Landscape\, Historic St. Mary’s Commission\, the Maryland Commission on Indian Affairs\, Survival International and Amnesty International. She is rooted in the tidewater lands\, caring for places especially along Nanjemoy Creek\, with family\, striving always to be a good relative and ancestor. \nMembers: FREE | Non-Members: FREE \nNote: This program will be held LIVE at Tudor Place and  virtually. \nIn-Person Registration Link: Click here. \nVirtual Registration Link: Click here.  You will be sent instructions on how to access the virtual event one day before the event.

SUMMARY:Landmark Lecture: Uncovering Longer Histories of Dumbarton Oaks
DESCRIPTION:No place holds one\, singular story. Every place is contested\, complex\, layered and full of both histories and futures.  Thaisa Way\, Director of Gardens and Landscape Studies at Dumbarton Oaks\, will explore how we have come to understand a longer and more complex history of the land within which Dumbarton Oaks sits. We explore the land as an archive and as a future. It is ancestral and kin lands for the Piscataway and a place that was realized through the labor and living of enslaved people and communities. It is a land that has been witness to these groups and the changes they made in the landscape over thousands of years. Land is not a stage on which history takes place. It is not a neutral site but rather shapes how we make space for our communities. This talk will share what we are learning and consider how this might shape how we imagine the future of our historic landscapes and gardens. \nDr. Thaisa Way holds a PhD from Cornell University\, a Master of Architectural History from the University of Virginia and a bachelor’s from the University of California\, Berkeley. She is a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome (2016) and a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects (2018). She was awarded the CELA Outstanding Educator Award in 2019 and the Mercedes Bass Visiting Scholar at the American Academy in Rome in 2023. She is a scholar of landscape history teaching in the Department of Landscape Architecture at the Graduate School of Design\, Harvard University and previously at the College of Built Environments\, University of Washington\, Seattle. As a leader in the academy\, Dr. Way was elected Chair of Faculty Senate at the University of Washington (2016-2019) and continues to mentor scholars/leaders in universities across the nation.

SUMMARY:Landmark Lecture: Resting in Resistance: The Black Cemeteries of Georgetown
DESCRIPTION:The Mount Zion and Female Union Band Society Cemeteries stand as two of Washington\, DC’s oldest African American burial grounds\, yet their histories remain largely overlooked. These sacred spaces bear witness to the lives of Black Georgetown’s residents—enslaved and free—who shaped the city’s history but were often excluded from its recorded narratives. \nIn this Landmark Lecture\, Lisa Fager\, Executive Director of the Black Georgetown Foundation\, will explore the cemeteries as sites of remembrance\, resistance and resilience. Through historical accounts\, archaeological findings and ongoing preservation efforts\, she will highlight their significance in Georgetown’s Black community\, the Underground Railroad and the broader struggle for African American dignity in life and death. \nAdditionally\, Lisa will provide an up-to-date overview of the ongoing preservation efforts\, including new discoveries through archaeology\, recent partnerships\, community engagement initiatives and the DC African American Burial Grounds Act of 2025\, which seeks to secure funding and legal protections for these historic sites. \nThis discussion will illuminate the ongoing fight to reclaim\, protect and preserve Black Georgetown’s hidden history—a story that continues to unfold today. \nLisa Fager is the Executive Director of the Black Georgetown Foundation\, a nonprofit organization dedicated to reclaiming the past and preserving the future of the historic Mount Zion and Female Union Band Society Cemeteries in Georgetown. Active from 1808 to 1950\, these cemeteries are among the oldest historically African American burial grounds in Washington\, DC. Lisa leads efforts to protect\, restore and interpret these sacred spaces\, ensuring that the wealth of stories\, historical artifacts and legacies of Black Georgetown are properly recognized and honored. \nUnder her leadership\, the Foundation has gained national recognition. Lisa’s work is featured in The Washington Post\, The New York Times\, Discovery Science Channel\, PBS NewsHour and numerous other publications and media outlets. She is also a published scholar\, co-authoring “Nannie’s Stone: Commemoration and Resistance” with Mark Auslander in Southern Spaces (July 2023). \nLisa’s commitment to historic preservation\, public memory and community engagement continues to shape the future of Black Georgetown\, ensuring that its history remains a vital part of the national narrative.

SUMMARY:Landmark Lecture: Who Were the Custises?
DESCRIPTION:Listen to Dr. Cassandra Good discuss her book “First Family: George Washington’s Heirs and the Making of America” in conversation with Tudor Place Curator Rob DeHart. The book tells the story of George Washington’s step-grandchildren\, the Custises\, including Martha Custis Peter of Tudor Place. The Custis siblings used their famous family ties to enhance their power and status\, becoming celebrities in a soap opera of their own making. They were also enslavers committed to an expanding American empire. Good and DeHart will focus their discussion on the Peter family and enslaved people at Tudor Place\, placing them in the broader context of the complexities of fame\, family and race in the 19th century. \nCassandra Good is a historian and writer who serves as Associate Professor of History at Marymount University. She previously worked for the Smithsonian Institution and received her PhD from the University of Pennsylvania. She is the author of multiple scholarly and popular articles\, as well as two books. Her most recent book\, “First Family: George Washington’s Heirs and the Making of America” (Hanover Square\, 2023)\, was a finalist for the George Washington Prize.
