Apply now to join the 2021 class of Civil War in Washington Teacher Fellows

Open to teachers K-12, this week-long virtual institute provides educators the tools to grapple with the complex history of enslavement and emancipation.

Join up to 24 fellow educators online to explore historical sites associated with the Civil War, reflect on how your personal understanding of the Civil War impacts your teaching, and practice strategies that help students grasp the legacies of the Civil War and slavery.

Participants will:
• Virtually visit Frederick Douglass’s home, Cedar Hill, to examine the importance of historical images and the power of photography
• Virtually visit Tudor Place to explore southern women’s memories of the Civil War
• Virtually visit Ford’s Theatre to learn about the uses of storytelling in learning about the past
• Virtually visit President Lincoln’s Cottage to reflect on past and present conversations about race and emancipation
• Access a wealth of tools, resources, and primary sources
• Strengthen historical thinking skills and gain confidence in working through historical complexities with your students
• Forge a peer educator network that stretches across the country

Program Details:
• Daily commitment of approximately three (3) hours.
• FREE to educators
• Successful completion of the program certifies 18 hours of professional development.
