Georgetown Garden Treasures
A Special Tour of Tudor Place and Dumbarton Oaks

Tour two of Washington’s most celebrated landscapes with the people who know them best: Gail Griffin, Director of Gardens & Grounds at Dumbarton Oaks, and Suzanne Bouchard, Director of Gardens & Grounds at Tudor Place. From roses to hay bales to tea houses, learn how these storied landscapes have evolved aesthetically and functionally since the 1800s and understand the challenges surrounding their preservation today.

Summer History Weeks
HALF-DAY PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN AGES 4-10week-long sessions, June 18-August 10
Georgetown's Summer History Weeks let children learn American history through hands-on experiences they will enjoy and remember. Cooking and sampling snacks and drinks of times past, playing period games and trying on period clothes, studying the historic garden up close and planting their own, painting watercolor landscapes, archaeological digs, and more are all part of living history daily right here in Georgetown. Fairies in the Garden

Bring your favorite Tinkerbell to dress up in magical fairy costumes, complete with tutus, wands, and wings. After dressing for tea, hear costumed interpreters show and tell all about the favored drink of early America. After enjoying tea and desserts, tour Tudor Place’s enchanting fairy gardens and make a special period craft to take home.

Girl Scout Garden Party at Tudor Place

Celebrate Scouting's centennial at one of Georgetown’s most historic gardens. Scouts start with a scavenger hunt through 5.5 acres of historic gardens. Indoors, in picturesque garden rooms, costumed interpreters will lead them in historic gaming and dancing. Then, meet and mingle with other Scouts while enjoying period crafts and refreshments in Tudor Place’s historic Pierce Arrow Garage!

WALKING TOUR, 1 – 2 p.m.
Learn what life was like in Georgetown and the Federal City during this critical test of American democracy. On the house tour, learn about those who lived on the estate and the enslaved workers who served them. Hear family stories about how Tudor Place served as home to Southern sympathizers even while housing Union officers and their families.
After a lunch break, join or rejoin us for an early afternoon walking tour of Civil War Georgetown, visiting burial sites, a Union hospital, residences of military leaders, and a neighborhood home to enslaved and free African Americans.
Participate in either or both tours:

Tudor Nights
A Midsummer's Enchantment

The sweet breath of midsummer breeds, if not fairies themselves, then dreams of fairies. As a Tudor Nights guest, revel in the enchantments of a June evening in Tudor Place's five acres of gardens. In the mansion, view imprints from Andrew Lang’s charming Fairy Series, featuring full-color plates and exquisite woodcuts by renowned children’s illustrators. The eight books came as girlhood gifts to Caroline Ogden-Jones, a society beauty who brought them with her to Tudor Place on her 1921 marriage to Armistead Peter 3rd. In the Tudor Place Townhouse, enjoy Vodka-Thyme Lemonade and a sweet-and-savory array of summer-themed treats, for a midsummer evening you won’t soon forget.

A Golden Father's Day

George Washington left his mark on Tudor Place, which contains more items linked to him than any site outside Mount Vernon. What better place to celebrate your favorite "Founding Father"? Begin with an interactive tour through the historic mansion, uncovering treasures from the first President. Then learn all about gilding – the application of gold leaf to mirrors, picture frames, and other decorative objects – and work as family groups to gild a gold-leaf frame to take home.
Bring cameras to take pictures with Dad in the gardens!

Independence Day Family Tea
Sunday, July 11 – 3 p.m.
Celebrate the nation’s birthday at the home of early patriots. Get to know America's First Family, the Washingtons, and their descendants through hands-on activities, a sit-down tea with tasty sweets, and an interactive tour. Children will begin by dressing up in period costumes, make a special patriotic craft, and learn to "take tea" from "Martha Washington," in full period dress. After tea, families will tour the historic mansion to learn about our first President.

Independence Day Ice Cream Social
Tuesday, July 31 – 3 p.m.
FREE TO MILITARY FAMILIES!
George Washington loved ice cream, and the founders of Tudor Place loved and revered George Washington, their forebear. So it's fitting to bring American history and this summertime favorite together to celebrate our nation's birthday at a family event! We'll start with a special, family-friendly mansion tour focusing on its many George and Martha Washington connections. Then, make your own ice cream sundaes in the garden, and enjoy children’s games and crafts. All participants will receive a special copy of a rare, personal letter from Washington belonging to the Tudor Place archives. One of just three such notes in existence, it is his affectionate note to his wife as he took up command of the Continental Army.
